American sports star and multiple former world champion Floyd Mayweather could face charges of alleged theft or fraud for using a bad check in 2024 to purchase a $200,000 watch.
In the United States, a theft charge carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison after a guilty plea, but it is not a common offense or one that results in such a lengthy sentence.
In December 2024, at the Gold & Beyond store in Las Vegas, Mayweather allegedly made a payment for a watch with a $200,000 check, but it bounced days later due to insufficient funds.
The lawsuit was filed in February 2026, and the plaintiffs allege that Mayweather insisted on purchasing the watch despite knowing what was happening with his personal finances and specifically the bank account from which the check was drawn.
It has recently been revealed that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has requested a $7.3 million lien on Mayweather for unpaid taxes.
