At the WBC's traditional "Coffee Tuesdays," world champion David Benavidez received the Tollan Tlatequi belt from the World Boxing Council (WBC) this Tuesday in recognition of his victory over Mexican Gilberto Ramirez on May 2nd in Las Vegas.
Benavidez was also chosen as the boxer of the month following his win in the 175-pound division.
The ceremony was attended by his father and trainer, José Benavidez, and his brother, José Benavidez Jr.
“I’m super excited to be in my country. I left Mexico at 11 years old to be an undocumented immigrant in the United States, and now our lives have changed because of boxing,” said Benavidez Sr.
“I still know I can give more; I haven’t reached 100 percent yet, and it’s the tough fights that motivate me the most. I’m no longer asking for a fight with Canelo Alvarez. I want to be part of big events, I want to be a legend, and I’m ready,” said David Benavidez.
Benavidez’s future includes a world championship opportunity in the cruiserweight division.
