Philippine chess wizard International Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca, the top player from Zamboanga City, has secured the top spot in the FIDE May 2026 Philippine U20 junior rankings – dominating BOTH the Standard (2396) and Rapid (2277) categories – besting all other players, male and female alike.
Arca continues to make waves in international competitions, having recently clinched second place in the Blitz Open and third place in the Top U18 category during the 23rd Bangkok Chess (BCC) Open 2026 held from April 11-19, 2026 at the Sheraton Hua Hin Resort and Spa in Thailand.
Arca is a multi-awarded chess master who has brought home numerous honors from various competitions here and abroad. He is coached by Mark Florendo.
His recent achievements include being crowned Champion at the PSC-NCFP Selection National Chess Championships Grand Finals in Quezon City last January 2026. In 2025, he also won multiple medals in major tournaments, including 5 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze at the Batang Pinoy in General Santos City, 1 gold and 2 silver at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in Bangkok, 2 gold and 1 bronze at the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship in China, and 2 silver and 3 bronze at the ASEAN+ Age Group Chess Championships in Malaysia, along with 1 silver medal at the Eastern Asia Juniors Chess Championship in Hong Kong.(Marlon Bernardino)
