Ex-OPBF champ Canoy will fight Azarcon in Sarangani

FORMER Orient and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) light flyweight champion Joey Canoy of General Santos City will fight Clyde “Pogi” Azarcon of Davao City on July 12 at Malungon Municipal Gymnasium in Sarangani Province.

The 30-year-old Canoy left the light flyweight division to return to the minimumweight division.

He won the vacant OPBF light flyweight title by scoring a technical knockout in the 7th round against Kenichi Horikawa of Japan last December 4, 2022 at the EDION Arena, Osaka

Canoy, who will now fight at 105 pounds, is sparring with stablemates Vince “J-Vince” Paras (19-2-1, 15KOs) and Ben “Nightmare” Mananquil (18-4-3, 5KOs).

“I don't have a problem with 105 because that's what I weigh”, said Canoy.

Azarcon, on the other hand, recently lost to Jake Amparo for the vacant Philippine minimum title last May 6, 2023 in Guindulman.

Azarcon (17-7-1, 6KOs) won the vacant WBF Intercontinental minimum title by a majority decision against Mike Kinaadman of Iligan in Cebu City.

Meanwhile, Mananquil will also fight in the undercard against Jeny Boy Boca (14-10-0, 12KOs) in an 8-round bantamweight bout.

The fight is dubbed as the “Malungon Knockout Nite” by the MTDC Promotions.

It is part of the town's 54th Foundation Anniversary and is in line with the Mayor's and Governor's Cup 2023.
